Description
Dog Breed: Shepherd / Mixed (long coat). Gruff (TX) is a male Shepherd mix rescued in Texas. Our veterinary partner estimates that Gruff is 1 year old at the time of intake in May 2022. Gruff is good with people and other dogs and cats. It's obvious that this sweet boy's life was in despair when we found him. We don't know if Gruff once had a family who loved him, or if he lived his whole life off the kindness of strangers in the street. But we do know that whatever his past life was, it's over and his life restarts today. Gruff is a handsome guy who plays so well with other dogs and doesn't even mind cats, he is very gentle who deserves the very best. He does great on a leash and gets excited for walks, he plays fetch with his pink octopus and mastering his commands like "come". He can be very playful so dog savvy kids or older (12+), he gets excited and likes to play. Gruff would do best in a fenced in yard. Gruff is in a foster home with 4 other dogs and he is doing so well, he longs for a home of his own. Please consider giving this happy boy a home and family. A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
