Description
Dog Breed: Podengo Portugueso. A quick look at Wanda and you probably think she is a Terrier mix. Actually, she is a Portuguese Podengo Pequeno, a breed known for its many wonderful qualities, most notably playful, charming, lively, inquisitive, and intelligent. Wanda certainly has all of these qualities and more. Although she is about 7-10 years old, Wanda has the energy and gusto of a much younger dog. She is a very bright and friendly girl, always ready to engage for playtime or affection. Wanda embraces all the attention she receives, and enjoys it all from playing with toys, playing fetch, romping in the yard, to cuddling up for love and belly rubs. Wanda is ready to brighten up a new family with her spry, fun, sweet personality. She gets along with other dogs, but would be fine as the only dog in her new home. She currently weighs about 21-22 pounds, but should be about 18 pounds at proper weight. Wanda continues to be passed on for our Shih Tzus and other smaller, younger dogs, and has been at the rescue for way too long. A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
