Allow us to introduce Cali — a medium-sized mystery mix with expressive ears, world-class hops, and a PhD in Playology. Energy level? A solid 7 out of 10 — enough to keep things lively, but not enough to start a fitness cult. Her favorite thing in the whole wide world is playing with other dogs. Second favorite? Playing with people. Third favorite? Playing. This girl thrives with another playful pup around, or a human who doesn’t mind tossing a toy 374 times. She’s amazing with kids, completely unbothered by loud noises, and thinks fear is for cats (don’t tell her we said that — her prey drive is already on high alert). Speaking of which: if it’s smaller than her and not a dog, she’s probably chasing it. Squirrels, rabbits, that one suspicious leaf — Cali is ON IT. Now, about the fence thing… she can jump. A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
