Description
Dog Breed: Hound / Shepherd / Mixed (medium coat). River is a young Georgia Peach. She came to us after being rescued from a ditch, where people fed her for 3 weeks to gain her trust to be able to secure her. She is a timid but very loving girl, and has blossomed in the time she has been in care. It turns out River has a malformed leg, and hip dysplasia (in both hips), which may lead to her being in a wheelchair at some point in her life but for now she is happy and mobile. River's perfect home would have at least one other dog and to have humans with a lot of patience, time, love and affection for her as she takes her time to open up to them. Once she does, she is a stage 5 clinger so ideally someone who is home often would be great. Her favorite toy is a snuffle ball and favorite activity is cuddling and sleeping near her humans. River’s foster mom had this to say about her: “She is the sweetest snuggliest girl. Very silly and gets quite excited. Great unique little personality when jealous. She loves her k9 companions and is very caring. No accidents in the home nor destructive behaviours. Just a sweet easy girl aside from her skittish behavior. She loves to take the clothes of her people and lay with them or on them“ River really needs another dog in her forever home as a companion and to help with her confidence. When meeting other dogs while loose and playing, she’s playful. On leash she can be more cautious River has been around young children She does not like their loud noises or fast movements. With some time and with considerate and dog savvy kids, she will eventually come around and will slowly allow pets and contact. River is cautious when meeting new people and can particularly be weary of men. With exposure she can become more comfortable over time. She first likes to circle and observe. River is quite skiddish and does not like loud noises and needs time to warm up with slow introductions. She is starting leash training with her foster mom. It took her quite some time to become comfortable walking on leash and enjoying it but she’s now starting to be more comfortable and will walk along side her foster fur sister. Crate trained ✅ River is crate trained however she likes to sleep in bed with her foster mom and is not put in her crate when left alone as she is not destructive River does okay in the car It’s not her favourite place and she can become anxious if in the car without her people or her foster fur sibling. She has not shown any resource guarding of any kind including with toys, food, or treats. River is a low-medium energy girlie. She currently does water therapy at Puddle Paws Hydrotherapy and on days she has no therapy, she has 2 short walks. ADOPTION FEE: River’s adoption fee is fully sponsored THERAPY FEE: River’s water therapy is fully sponsored. Her continuing sponsorship of water therapy will be discussed with approved applicants. MEDICATION FEE: Her ongoing medication costs are: Metacam and Gabapentin, as needed River is being fostered in Orillia, ON

Breed overview

Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
