Description
Dog Breed: Unknown breed. IN VERMONT Meet Ferda aka Katniss! More pictures and video below or to come! Ferda is 5 1/2 years old, female (approx. DOB 9-12-19), 62 lbs., vetted, is or will be spayed, and micro-chipped. Hi, I'm Ferda, and I'm a sweet, 70-pound girl who's looking for a calm yet interactive home! I'm a low-to-medium energy dog, which means I'm basically an expert in the fine art of lounging during the day. I'm perfectly happy to hang out autonomously while you work—no destructive chewing, separation anxiety, or crate needed for this good girl! I'm a great housemate: I'm fully potty-trained and will let you know very clearly if I need to go out off-schedule. I'm smart, too! I know Sit, Shake Paw, and Lay Down, and I'm a phenomenal catcher of tossed treats. I do have a few areas where I could use a coach. I get a little nervous meeting new people and will sometimes do a polite "stranger alert" when you first come in, but I calm down quickly when my person assures me everything's fine. I can get overstimulated when I see other dogs on a walk, but I'm coachable—I just need an owner committed to helping me feel more secure in those moments. I also have a knack for finding rabbits and squirrels, but my people have successfully taught me to curb my prey drive on command. I'd be happiest in a rural home with people who will let me "be a dog" and take time to sniff everything during our quiet walks! Stay tuned for more information as Ferda is a new rescue! If you are interested in Ferda please fill out an Application at .Passion-4-Paws (please make sure you have the Vermont site not CT) - thanks! Please note Fosters have 1st option of Adoption. Check out her Facebook page (please "Like" us while you are there)! Disclosure: Breed labels are often incorrect: we rarely know the genetic lineage of the dogs we rescue. Many shelters and rescues specify breeds based on appearance; however, research has shown that less than 2% of a dog’s DNA determines appearance! Passion 4 Paws does not practice the use of labels pertaining to compatibility with others or dog breed. Labels such as “dog friendly” and “child friendly” should be used with caution as they often over-simplify the personalities and behavior of dogs.

Breed overview
Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
