Description
Dog Breed: Black Labrador Retriever / Mixed. All of the animals posted on our site have been temperament tested. While not all are in the immediate area, once we have processed and approved your application, we will move the dog to our adoptive area for you to meet, greet and hopefully adopt. Sometimes we will have more than one application on a dog. That does not mean it automatically goes to another family but you should be aware of the fact that until you are approved and set up for the meet/greet.. the dog could get adopted by another applicant. NOTE- ONYX IS LISTED AS A COURTESY FOR AN INDIVIDUAL ASKING TO REHOME THEIR DOG. PLEASE SEE CONTACT INFO BELOW. e.jaffe12gmail Onyx is a 5 year old black lab mix. She was surrendered to the ACC in December of 2023. We began fostering her some days later and adopted her a couple months after that. She is sweet, empathetic, and protective. She loves to cuddle with her humans and will relentlessly lick your face if you so much as think of crying. Her original owners report that she was attacked by a larger dog resulting in reactivity to other dogs. She will lunge at dogs, cats, birds, and people she perceives as dangerous while on a walk: that said, she has made huge strides in her recall and leash walking with consistent training, which needs to be continued. Onyx likes to take long walks (she gets very excited when she sees her harness) and play fetch in the backyard! She's not very interested in most toys, though she loves her bone and will happily tear into a plushy. She'd rather sit on your lap and be pet :) She's very well house-trained and knows basic commands. She won't make a mess if left alone while you are in the office (she will not under any circumstance go potty inside, so make sure she's not alone inside for too long though). She likes meeting new people, but can be over-excited easily. Onyx needs to be the only pet in a low-traffic, adults-only household. We have worked hard to get her comfortable with living with the other dog in our household, but have not been successful, with her resource guarding getting worse in recent months. We can no longer keep them living together safely. An owner experienced in working with reactive animals would be preferred. If you are interested in adopting ONYX, please fill out an application at .reachoutrescue and email her caretaker at : e.jaffe12gmail ONYX is located in Austin Texas.

Breed overview

Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
