Description
Dog Breed: Belgian Shepherd Malinois. Adoption Fee: $425. ____________________________________________________________ Chris Wood - Coordinator Lorcan, in keeping with his name’s meaning “little fierce one,” has transformed into the Malinois he was meant to be! Through a lot of love and patience from his foster and the ABMR community rallying around him. Are you the person to continue the work his wonderful foster began? Lorcan came into ABMR malnourished at only 31.4 lbs, but he is a happy 70-ish pounds at his last vet visit. Now that he is in good health and his treatment has concluded, he is very much a typical Malinois! He will need continued patience as he can startle with sudden, loud sounds, but he loves to howl at sirens. Lorcan thrives on routine for feeding and potty time, so if you love a good regimen, Lorcan is your man! He would be good with kids 8 and older who are dog savvy. No younger children will be considered as he is still working on controlling his Malinois mouthiness, and he does have enough prey drive to chase anything that runs (not safe for small dogs, cats, etc.) . Lorcan gets along with other dogs as long as a human is there to set boundaries after very controlled introductions . He is pushy with less neutral or passive dogs, but he will shy away from the dominant ones. He has fun playing with most of the big dogs in his foster home. Lorcan is crate trained, loves to take himself for a walk by holding his leash in his mouth , and he loves a few moments of zoomies. Just make sure you have not left important items like your favorite shoes lying around for him to zoom with! Lorcan enjoys physical activity, but he may need to take some breaks on his walks or walk/runs. He is not a long distance runner, but he is a good active companion. He has mastered sit, stay, down, and wait with his foster family. Lorcan still exhibits some puppy-like behaviors and can be a bit stubborn until he trusts you, but once he does he will snuggle you all day. Velcro, anyone? ***Special Note: After Lorcan's last heartworm treatment, he began to have "fly biting" seizures. These are focal seizures and not full body. The condition does not change the fact he is a young Malinois who will need to have his mental and physical needs met, but he will need a home willing to monitor this and give daily medication. For more information about fly biting seizures, please use the link below. vcahospitals/know-your-pet/focal-seizures-and-fly-biting-in-dogs Original Notes: Lorcan was found as a stray in Atlanta, Georgia. He weighed only 31.4 lbs. at an estimated age of 3 years, heartworm positive, and hair loss around the neck as if he'd been chained. He came into rescue for treatment and recovery. ABMR thanks you for taking the time to look at our malinois available for adoption.

Breed overview

Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
