Description
Dog Breed: English Coonhound (medium coat). Nipsey is looking for someone with a big, patient heart to help her learn how to dog. Sheâs such a Nervous Nelly at the moment. Sheâs not super comfortable being around people, but weâre helping her practice. At the moment she prefers her space and keeping some distance from you. Nipseyâs nerves often have her coming across as rude when sheâs really just scared. She just appreciates lots of space. Even loose in the play yard â which is most shelter dogsâ happy place â her anxiety shows. She trots laps and maintains as much distance from you as she possibly can. She seems most comfortable in her kennel by herself. As treat motivated as she is, we think thatâs the ticket to her heart. Sheâll happily take treats gently from your hand through her kennel, but then she scampers off to eat them by herself. She has done well interacting with other dogs in shelter playgroups though, and she's also proven herself to be potty trained! With lots of time and patience in a previous foster home she warmed up well to the children, and even enjoyed them loving and petting on her. We know itâll take a special soul to help Nipsey trust people, but sheâs worth it!

Overview:
The English Coonhound, also known as the American English Coonhound, is a handsome and athletic breed with a rich history rooted in the American South, where they were developed for hunting raccoons and other small game. Physically, they are medium to large-sized dogs, boasting a lean, muscular build, expressive, soulful eyes, and a short, dense coat typically found in redtick, bluetick, tricolor, or bicolored patterns. Temperamentally, English Coonhounds are generally affectionate, good-natured, and intelligent, making them wonderful companions for active families. However, their strong prey drive and characteristic "baying" bark mean they are often not ideal for apartment living and require a secure, fenced yard for their ample exercise needs. While generally healthy, potential owners should be aware of a predisposition to certain conditions like hip and elbow dysplasia and eye problems. With proper training and socialization, they can be incredibly loyal and loving additions to the right household.
