Dog Breed: Shih Tzu / Mixed. Deserving of a second chance at life is dear little 8-year-old Drako. His 14-pound frame was covered with so much overgrown, matted hair when he was surrendered to a shelter that he was listed as a Shih Tzu. But after a much-needed grooming, he looks more like an adorable terrier mix! Sadly, however, that same grooming revealed a wound so deeply infected in his back left leg that it had to be amputated. Now, as he settles into his foster home, Drako, despite his recent trauma, is sweet, gentle and kind, and is especially devoted to his doting foster dad. Understandably sensitive about being touched on his left side, he loves snuggling with his foster dad, resting his head on him, having his belly rubbed, and burrowing under the covers. While he’s passionate about toys, particularly his stuffed swordfish, Drako prefers putting them in his bed to keep him company rather than playing with them at the moment. Gradually accustoming himself to the three resident dogs, he’s going on one 20-minute walk a day around the neighborhood, honing his leash skills along the way, and is friendly and gentle towards the older children he’s met. Fond of doggy bones and dental chews as treats, he’s about to start working on his “sit,” “stay” and “down” commands, isn’t presently crated and is almost fully house-trained. Now Drako’s dream home is one with older children, a canine companion and someone there more often than not who will patiently and lovingly build on his progress, complete his training, including his commands, and teach him how wonderful the world can truly be. Animal Rescue of the Rockies believes every pet should find a wonderful and caring home. To ensure each pet finds the best possible home, we ask you fill out our adoption application so we can learn more about you and your household. We review each application in the order submitted and will contact you within 48 hours (please check your spam folder for our emails). If you and the dog are a good match then we'll connect you with our dog's foster parents to chat more in-depth. If both you and the foster agree that the dog is a good fit then a meet and greet is scheduled. We require applicants' dogs to meet ours to ensure they get along. We'll ask you to read and sign our adoption agreement and pay the adoption fee to complete the adoption when it comes time. Our adoption fees help cover the costs of saving more lives! A home visit will be scheduled within one week of your new pet going home with you. The adoption fee for this pet is $100. Our adoption fee covers the following: Spay/neuter Microchip DAPP vaccinations as age-appropriate for the dog. Rabies vaccinations as age-appropriate for the dog.
