Description

Dog Breed: Beagle. Adoption Fee: $200. Belle Ami is a senior female beagle who was surrendered to animal control after being tethered on a chain in a yard. Belle Ami’s name is French for “beautiful friend” and that is all she wants to be in life –to snuggle and be a beautiful friend to whoever loves her. She is affectionate, and likes to stay close to her people. Belle is always nearby wherever they are. She gets along with her foster dog siblings, except that she does get jealous when they are getting food or attention or a bed that she wants, and then she will growl at them. She will snuggle with the other dogs if it is her idea. She would probably like best to be an only dog, but can tolerate other dogs if needed. Belle Ami is moderately active and will follow you anywhere. She generally is quiet in the house and the yard unless she sees another dog or people pass by, and then she will bay for attention. She is friendly with strangers. Because she is strongly driven by food, she should be supervised around small children. She has never shown aggression to any person. Her house training is a work in progress – she will use a doggy door and go outside when that is available, but if it is not she will go inside. She gets restless and will go to the door when she needs to go out. She does not like being leashed or tethered, and will try to chew through the tether to escape. Her teeth are badly worn – the vet says she probably wore them out trying to chew through her chain every day. Belle deserves a better life as an indoor dog. She is such a snuggle bug. She would love it if she had a forever home. Adopters age 65 and over who adopt senior dogs (age 8 and older) pay a special adoption fee of $100.

Overview:

The Beagle is a beloved scent hound with a rich history, originally bred in England for hunting hare and rabbit. Their most recognizable physical traits include a sturdy, compact build, adorable floppy ears, and soulful brown or hazel eyes. Beagles typically weigh between 18-30 pounds and stand 13-16 inches tall, featuring a smooth, dense coat that comes in a variety of tri-color or bi-color patterns. In terms of temperament, they are known for being exceptionally friendly, curious, and outgoing, making them wonderful companions for families with children and other pets. However, their strong prey drive and inclination to follow interesting scents mean they require a securely fenced yard and consistent leash training. While adaptable, their need for exercise and tendency to vocalize (howl!) makes them less ideal for small apartment living unless daily walks and mental stimulation are guaranteed. Regarding health, Beagles can be prone to certain conditions like hip dysplasia, epilepsy, and intervertebral disc disease, making responsible breeding and regular veterinary check-ups important.
