Description
Dog Breed: Shepherd / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: 200. Bear exudes an energy of joy, hope and mischief! He is a sweet older dog (14-15) who is seeking a house that can offer him kindness and patience. He is still learning how to potty outside. He learned quickly how to navigate stairs and walk on a leash, so we’re hopeful he’ll master house training soon.He is a Shepherd mix and weighs around 50 lbs. After living outdoors on a farm for 15 years, Bear is now learning about retirement and being indoors. He now enjoys slow daily walks around the neighborhood and then happily settles into his peaceful naps. He has a puppy-like energy when playing with his toys and loves sniffing around and exploring. Bear has done well in his crate when sleeping at night. He settles within a few minutes, keeps his crate clean all night and stays in his crate until morning. That being said, we have also tested him out of his crate, having him sleep on his bed next to us at night and he does similarly well - stays put on his bed all night….but, he is a champion snorer! Bear is super chill and excellent with other animals and kids. Bear’s sight and hearing are compromised, but he doesn’t let that stop him from enjoying life. Bear may need some special attention paid to his diet in his first few weeks. He requires softer food due to worn teeth and has had some tummy troubles since his rescue. Bear has some pain associated with hip and elbow arthritis but cosequin and pain meds seem to be helping him. Aside from joint pain, though, Bear has no known medical issues. Bear is ready for his next family to spoil him with ear and butt scratches. He’ll thank you with gentle licks and snuggles. Breed overview

Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
