But despite his good looks, Patch has not found his forever family. This resilient and adventurous boy is finally getting his chance here in New England—and he is hoping that the next stop is his forever home. Patch may be a little shy when he first meets new people, but it does not take long for his curious personality to shine through. He is a super social guy. He enjoys belly rubs and rides in the car. He is a medium-energy dog who enjoys playtime but also knows how to relax. Patch gets along well with other dogs and children, making him a great fit for a family looking for a canine companion. His experience with cats, though, is unknown. Patch has not only made strides in his house and crate training, but he has mastered them as well. He already knows the sit command and is eager to learn more! Daily walks, neighborhood adventures, and trips to family outings are great ways to build his confidence and help him polish his leash walking skills that are still in progress. Patch is smart, willing, and full of potential to learn more—he just needs someone to believe in him. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
