Description
Dog Breed: Australian Kelpie / Mixed (medium coat). Meet Wylie, the 2 year old neutered male mixed breed. We have him listed as an Austrailian Kelpie mix but that is simply a guess. Although he is probably a mixed breed, we do know he is 100% a good boy! Because of this, he has quickly become a volunteer and staff favorite during his time at the Shelter. He attends daily Shelter playgroups with a variety of doggy friends (male and female) and is often used as the âhelper dogâ during behavior observations with staff. Wylie enjoys playing with similarly sized dogs best but has also respected and coexisted with a little chihuahua who tolerates Wylieâs presence. To add to his resume, Wylie also goes on regular day trips and sleepovers from the Shelter with volunteers. Theyâve noticed that he is adventurous, curious, engaging with people and has good leash manners. When excited, Wylie does sometimes do kangaroo hops (especially when he sees his favorite people and dogs!) but quickly calms down after greeting. After getting his yayaâs out through hiking and positive reinforcement based training (he really likes to work his brain), Wylie chills out. Adopters should plan on above average mental and physical stimulation, especially as Wylie transitions into his adoptive home to help him settle more easily during downtime. On his sleepover, he slept all night on his dog bed and enjoyed snuggling in bed with his favorite volunteer (after being invited up on the bed) and getting his belly rubbed. Wylie has demonstrated that he is likely house trained but may need a little refresher period in the new home (and with new people). Wylie would thrive as someoneâs adventure buddy and will bond through positive reinforcement based training. Could that be with you? Wylie's adoption fee is sponsored by the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation thanks to âLeave No One Behind fundâ â designed to adopterâs eyes towards animals who have been in the Shelterâs care a little longer than average waiting for the right adopter. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering âPawsitivity Bucksâ with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz locationâs Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end âmeet and greetsâ (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If youâd like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.
