Trixie is a 1-year-old terrier mix who weighs just 6 lbs—but don’t let her size fool you, her heart is huge! This sweet, ultra-affectionate girl would happily spend her entire day snuggled up in your lap. She craves connection and wants nothing more than to be close to her person. While she’s a cuddle queen at heart, Trixie is still very much a playful pup—she needs daily playtime and enrichment to keep her happy and healthy. She’s a bit shy at first, so she’s looking for a quiet, patient home with adults only or kids over 10. Trixie would do well with a calm, confident resident dog to help show her the ropes, but she’d also thrive as your one and only—as long as you’re around often to keep her company. A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
