Dog Breed: Unknown breed (medium coat). Meet Ganon Gan on is a medium-sized heeler mix approximately 2-years old dog weighing around 40 pounds. He’s friendly, social, and gets along well with people, other dogs, and kids—especially slightly older children. He recently enjoyed hiking with a group that included kids and did great on the trail. From March to May, Ganon participated in a prison training program at Bell County, where he learned basic commands and developed good structure. He’s intelligent, eager to please, and has a nice energy level that would make him a great fit for an active individual or family. While Ganon can be a bit tentative in new situations, he warms up quickly and shows his playful, affectionate side. With continued encouragement and a little patience, he’ll blossom into an amazing companion. A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
