Dog Breed: Terrier. Meet Max, a heartbroken boy whose world was turned upside down when his owner surrendered him. This sweet soul is terrified in the shelter, and it shows—but even through his fear, he allowed one of our volunteers to gently bathe him, covered in fleas and in desperate need of relief. We think he was grateful, even if he didn’t know how to show it at first. What shattered us most was seeing him pee in fear when brought back inside—his eyes full of confusion and sadness. Max isn’t just scared; he’s grieving. He needs someone with patience, kindness, and a soft place to land to help him heal. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
