Description
Dog Breed: Shepherd / Mixed (short coat). Name: Persephone Sex: Female Estimated Age: About 8 weeks old (as of 6/27/25) Best Guess for Breed: Shepherd Mix Weight: About 6 lbs (as of 6/27/25) Lives With: Dogs, cats and people! Puppies are in the prime of socialization. Housebroken? She’s working on her potty training and making great progress! Story: Persephone was rescued from a shelter in North Carolina with 6 littermates. We are so happy to have her safe and sound in a foster home in the DC area now. Persephone is a happy sweetie who loves people and gets along great with other dogs and puppies. She knows just how to get comfortable up on the couch with her humans, and will love to join you on walks and trots around the neighborhood. Persephone is just looking for someone to be her new best furend and we know that she will repay them with endless amounts of love and tail wags. Like all dogs, Persephone will need an adopter who is committed to setting her up for success by enrolling in obedience training and exercising her both mentally and physically. She will also need love, patience, and socialization in order to thrive! What my foster says: Persephone is a sweet, curious, playful, and endearing little bug. She has perfected puppy eyes but don’t let that trick you, she is as sassy as ever. This girl loves people and dogs, and is determined to make you love her. She loves to explore her surroundings and bravely tries new things like going up and down steps or adventuring in the bushes. When it’s time to chill out, she will happily snuggle in your arms and give you kisses…and ear nibbles. While she hasn’t mastered the art of fetch or nose work, she is working on it! All of her meals are in a snuffle mat and she uses that brain diligently. She also loves playing tug, chase, and keep away, and is a big fan of rearranging her bed and blankets in her pen. She also loves to train - because she loves treats - and is learning some basic commands like sit, touch, and down. Like all puppies, your girl loves to jump up and give love, which will require patience and training. She is working on potty and crate training and it is going well! She goes potty on training pads inside but immediately relieves herself when she goes outside. Persephone does well in her crate when there are no humans around…but if you’re nearby she will let you know that she is unhappy in the crate when she could be snuggling or playing with you! You would never guess that the sound she makes is coming from her - think Scuttle from The Little Mermaid :D Persephone has had some tough times but you wouldn’t know it. This little one had pneumonia and spent over 24-hours in the emergency room. Everyone who worked with her fell in love with her spunky, feisty personality. She has recovered wonderfully and is thriving! We think she would fit in perfectly with just about any family, but would especially love a family with kids or another dog who are committed to helping her exercise her mentally and and physically. The fee to adopt Persephone is $475. That covers the cost of all her vaccines, the collar she’s wearing, her transport to DC and her care in her foster home. She’s up to date on all age appropriate vaccines. If you think that Persephone might be your perfect match, apply today!

Breed overview

Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
