Description
Dog Breed: Shepherd / Mixed (short coat). Name: Poseidon Sex: Male Estimated Age: About 8 weeks old (as of 6/27/25) Best Guess for Breed: Shepherd Mix Weight: About 6 lbs (as of 6/27/25) Lives With: Dogs, cats and people! Puppies are in the prime of socialization. Housebroken? He’s working on his potty training and making great progress! Story: Poseidon was rescued from a shelter in North Carolina with 6 littermates. We are so happy to have him safe and sound in a foster home in the DC area now. Poseidon is a happy sweetie who loves people and gets along great with other dogs and puppies. He knows just how to get comfortable up on the couch with his humans, and will love to join you on walks and trots around the neighborhood. Poseidon is just looking for someone to be his new best furend and we know that he will repay them with endless amounts of love and tail wags. Like all dogs, Poseidon will need an adopter who is committed to setting him up for success by enrolling in obedience training and exercising him both mentally and physically. He will also need love, patience, and socialization in order to thrive! What my foster says: Poseidon is a sweet, curious, playful, and endearing little bug. He loves people and dogs very much following us wherever we go - he reminds us of a little duckling. Poseidon’s most endearing quality is his little trot when he runs to you. It’s like he knows he is about to get the best treats or pets every time you call him. He is very much a snuggle bug and loves to cuddle in your arms or right next to you. He also does well responding to feedback from the bigger (much bigger) resident dogs. Poseidon likes to explore new surroundings with humans or dogs, but not independently until he is comfortable with the new surroundings. While he hasn’t mastered the art of fetch or nose work, he is working on it! All of his meals are in a snuffle mat and he uses that brain diligently but he needs reminders to focus sometimes because he gets distracted with…anything. He also loves playing tug, chase, and keep away. He also loves to train - because he loves praise, pets, and treats - and is learning some basic commands like sit, touch, and down. Like all puppies, he can jump up when trying to give love, which will require patience and training. He is working on potty and crate training and it is going well! He goes potty on training pads inside but immediately relieves himself when he goes outside. Poseidon is an athletic little escape artist so a crate with a top instead of a pen is recommended. He does well in his crate when there are no humans around…but if you’re nearby he will let you know that he is unhappy in the crate when he could be snuggling or playing with you! We think he would fit in perfectly with just about any family, but would especially love a family with kids or another dog who are committed to helping him exercise mentally and and physically. The fee to adopt Poseidon is $475. That covers the cost of all his vaccines, the collar he’s wearing, his transport to DC and his care in his foster home. He’s up to date on all age appropriate vaccines. If you think that Poseidon might be your perfect match, apply today!

Breed overview

Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
