Description
Dog Breed: Hound / Shepherd / Mixed (medium coat). Selene was found as a stray in Independence, NJ. Further investigation led us to her owners but they signed her over to us. They are unable to take care of her and had been calling all rescues and no one could help them. We aren’t judging but perhaps there could have been a better way to relinquish this dog. Selene is as sweet as can be but had never been to the vet or spayed. She is current on her vaccinations and will be spayed. Selene is very thin so we are feeding her several times a day in order to get her weight back up. Selene is on the small side and between 1 and 2 years old. We are still getting to know her but she has been amazing with all of us and doesn’t seem to mind the dogs around her. We promise her nothing but love moving forward and she is most certainly deserving of a family who will never let her go. If interested in Selene, please fill out an adoption application out at njshpetrescue

Breed overview

Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
