Named after a quiet, magical beach on Fire Island, she arrived like a secret whispered by the waves — a black and white sweetheart with a heart as vast as the ocean and a snuggle game stronger than the tide. With her inky velvet patches and snowy-soft coat, Kismet looks like she was painted by moonlight — each brushstroke placed with love. She’s elegance wrapped in fluff, with just a dash of beachy whimsy. But don’t let her movie-star markings fool you — this girl is as down-to-earth as they come. All she wants is you, a soft place to land, and endless cuddles. Come meet Kismet — your black-and-white lighthouse in a world of noise, guiding you gently home. The Rescue is open 7 days a week for you to come and meet our pets! Walk-ins are welcome! In order to interact with them, you’ll need a simple questionnaire filled out. Please understand that we cannot hold pets for any reason. All adoptions are done on a first come, first adopt basis for pre-approved applicants. The Shelter software system requires that we choose a predominant breed or breed mix for our dogs. Visual breed identification in dogs is unreliable so for most of our dogs we are only guessing at predominant breed or breed mix. We encourage you to select your new companion by considering each dog's individual personality and pet qualities instead of relying on a breed label that is only a guess.

A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
