Description
Dog Breed: Yorkshire Terrier Yorkie (long coat). Kody is a handsome boy who is looking for a new home. He is now in a NJ foster home because his previous owner could no longer afford to care for him. He came to us very skinny - he needed good nutrition and basic veterinary care. Kody is about 5 years old, and weighs 9 lbs (we're good at fattening up dogs). Kody shows signs of not having the best life before - the tip of his tail was broken and has healed but is a little crooked. We were told that he didn't go outdoors much because the owner was afraid he'd get fleas... Kody is living with 5 other dogs and is fine with them but hasn't yet started to play with them. He is crate trained. He is starting to play with toys, and seems to enjoy going for walks. He wants to say hello to strangers on his own terms - if he comes up to someone, he is fine, but he will bark if someone comes to him. Kody loves being in laps but does get possessive of whoever is holding him. Kody is not yet housetrained; we're working on it. He wears a belly band (diaper) in the house, just in case he forgets. Kody is now up-to-date with vaccines, has been neutered and microchipped, and he tested negative for heartworm disease. He also had a dental cleaning with us. Adopting a dog is a commitment that will require annual veterinary care at a minimum, training, exercise, enrichment, etc. Pet care is not cheap or easy and adopters should consider the costs, time and training prior to adoption. After all these dogs have been through they deserve a loving, committed home. How to Adopt Me! Breed overview

Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
