Dog Breed: Border Collie / Mixed (medium coat). Meet Ben, the border collie mix. This guy is XL in size and is looking for an exercise buddy who will help him increase his daily step count as well as start an appropriate diet to get into his summer body. Adopters should work with their veterinarian to determine an appropriate weight loss plan for Ben so that he starts to feel more comfortable. Overweight animals having higher risks of increased medical risks so getting Ben to a healthier weight will be a priority for his next family. Ben has been hanging out in a foster home for the past week or so and has gotten glowing reviews. Here is what his foster reports: `Ben is a Border Collie mix with a magical personality, so much so, he’s described as “part unicorn.” Friendly, gentle, and easygoing, Ben loves people, dogs, water, baths, car rides, and cuddles. While he dislikes fireworks, he’s otherwise a happy, affectionate guy who enjoys fetch, lounging nearby during outdoor activities, and joining in on zoomies with his dog friends. Ben is house-trained, well-mannered, and trustworthy when left alone indoors. He lives peacefully with dogs of various sizes and shows polite curiosity around cats, making him a good candidate for a multi-pet home. While he hasn’t lived with kids, his sensitivity and gentle nature suggest he could adapt with proper guidance.Though he’s still learning leash skills, Ben knows how to sit and shake, and takes treats gently. He could benefit from shedding a bit of weight, but his love of walks and play will help. Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.
