Dog Breed: Terrier / Mixed (medium coat). Adoption Fee: 450. Say hello to Figley—affectionately known as Fig! This 19-pound, 3-year-old terrier mix is as sweet as they come. From the moment he stepped into his foster home, he blended right in, charming everyone (humans, dogs, and even the cat!) with his gentle, loving nature. Fig is a social little guy who absolutely adores playing with his canine foster siblings and gets along great with the resident kitty. He hasn’t met a human he doesn’t adore—his tail is always wagging, ready to share his love. Fig would thrive in a calm, suburban home with a securely fenced yard and another playful pup to show him the ropes. Figley definitely needs someone who is home most of the day. He’s still working on his potty training and leash skills, but he’s eager to learn and responds well to a patient, loving routine. City life can feel a little overwhelming for Fig, so a quieter setting would be ideal to help him feel safe and confident. A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
