MILLER (TN) - RAT TERRIER (SHORT COAT) DOG FOR ADOPTION

Description

Dog Breed: Rat Terrier (short coat). You'd never believe it, but Miller was found in a home where he'd been abandoned -- starved, flea infested, and suffering from skin ailments due to the unsanitary conditions. Thankfully, Miller was able to shake off this terrible experience and quickly settle into his new foster home, suggesting that at some point in his past he had been well trained, socialized, and cared for. He is reliably house-trained (and has now learned to use a doggie door), has great house manners, is a good leash walker, accepts all handling – including baths and nail trims, and is a wonderfully sweet and affectionate snuggler. Miller is at about 5 years-old and weighs 13 lbs. He sits nicely for his meals but does have some residual trauma over food scarcity: he tends to snatch when something is offered and will turn thief when another dog's bowl is nearby. So he needs to be separated from other dogs at meal time and we are working on teaching him to "wait" on command. Miller is very quiet in the house, even when the doorbell rings, but may agitate some when he is left alone, and his fear of being left does make him somewhat of a sneaky door dasher. He has gotten along well with his canine foster brother who is blind and hearing impaired. However when he inadvertently invades Miller's personal space, he will warn him off with a snarl (that can't be detected!) and proceed to a nip but will immediately disengage. Miller loves nothing more than being invited onto your lap or beside you on the couch for some cuddling and neck rubbing. He will follow you around the house, hopeful for a treat or attention, but he isn't pesty about it and he'll calmly settle himself nearby when you're occupied.
