Dog Breed: Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Mixed. Phoebe – 8-Week-Old Aussie Mix Phoebe is one of six puppies found with their mama on the streets of Puerto Rico. Thankfully, kind-hearted people took them in and cared for them until AHOTO could bring them to safety. Now 8 weeks old (as of July 15th) and weighing just 8.5 lbs, Phoebe has made her journey all the way to Maryland, and she’s ready to start her next adventure—with a forever family! The vet believes Phoebe is an Australian Shepherd mix, and she certainly lives up to the breed’s reputation: smart, curious, and full of spunky personality. She’s sweet, playful, and already stealing hearts in her foster home. Phoebe would love a family that’s ready to keep up with her bright mind and joyful energy. She’s starting fresh in a new state, and all she needs now is someone to call her own. Could that be you?

A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
