Description

Dog Breed: Irish Terrier / Mixed (medium coat). Adoption Fee: $685. To apply to adopt this dog now, complete our adoption application HERE To see our upcoming events where you can meet some of our dogs, please see HERE Age: 2.5 years (as of 6/15/25) Weight: 84 lbs (as of 7/21/25) Location: RI This dog has been spayed/neutered, is up to date on shots, on heartworm preventative and is microchipped. Meet Spirit, a gentle giant who is sweet, and smart, with a calm yet goofy personality. Based upon appearance alone, we are thinking beautiful Spirit looks like an Irish Terrier mix, mixed with something MUCH larger and lower energy. Spirit is content to be left home alone loose for several hours at a time, but also loves being around her people. She will follow you room to room, but is not overbearing and is content to sit in the same room as (not on) her people. Spirit loves her walks and outside time, and is happy to engage in new activities out and about. She enjoys yard time with other dogs, as well as tug of war with her humans, but her stamina for intense activity is short-lived (she is a couch potato at heart!). This stamina may pick up as she resumes normal activity levels post-heartworm treatment. Spirit is currently living peacefully with two adult female humans and two other dogs. She is more of a co-exister with the other dogs, though there are brief moments of playful interaction, and does best with other dogs who are not excitable or reactive around food. She would do best in a home without cats on the property as she is triggered to chase them by their movement. Spirit will initially bark to inform of the arrival of any visitors onto the property/into the home, but quickly turns to tail wags and friendly body language when the stranger identifies as a friend. Spirit's leash walking experience has been limited due to her exercise restriction, but her access to a large fenced yard has been sufficient to meet her stimulation needs. Spirit is a smart girl and basic group training classes is recommended to help her learn commands, socialize with other humans and dogs, as well as build that fur-ever bond with you! Spirit's joyful demeanor and eagerness to please make her an ideal companion for anyone looking to add a super-sized bundle of love to their family. Adopt Spirit and experience the boundless joy and companionship she brings. Medical Note: This dog is being treated/has been treated for heartworm disease. Untreated heartworm disease can cause lasting damage to the heart, lungs and arteries, and can affect the dog’s health and quality of life even after the parasites are gone, possibly presenting as medical complications and/or new conditions in the future. Whenever possible, SOSARL advocates for following the American Heartworm Society guidelines for heartworm disease treatment as the safest and most effective methods; the active portion of this treatment protocol can take up to four months to complete. Once treatment is completed and the dog tests negative for microfilaria, the dog will be cleared to resume normal activity and will be ready to travel north and be placed into an adoptive home. This dog showed no symptoms of heartworm disease before or during treatment, and is expected to complete treatment with no complications. Please ask your Adoption Counselor for the specific treatment protocol used for and current status of this dog. Please check with your vet if you have any questions or concerns about this medical history. Medical Note: This dog has tested positive for exposure to ehrlichia. This does not mean that this dog had/has an active infection of ehrlichiosis, only that the dog was exposed or infected in the past. This dog is/has been asymptomatic while in SOS care and is being treated/has been treated preventatively with a 28-day course of doxycycline. This dog is ready for adoption, though may continue to test positive for exposure to ehrlichia for some time. Please see here for more information on ehrlichia, and please check with your vet before you apply to adopt this dog if you have any questions or concerns about this medical history. An adoption donation is required for each adoption; please see HERE for more information about this. To apply for this dog, fill out an adoption application on our website: Adoption Application - SOS Animal Rescue League in Rhode Island (sosarl) **Additional info you should know - For most of our dogs, we are only guessing at predominant breed or breed mix. We get to know each of our dogs as an individual and do our best to describe and place them based on personality not breed label. Some dogs may not yet be in New England, nor ready for immediate adoption. There may be additional vetting, quarantine, waiting periods and/or fees depending upon your state of residence. If you have questions or concerns on any of this, you can discuss this with your Adoption Counselor.
