Description
Dog Breed: Portuguese Water Dog (medium coat). CARSON is an 8 year old Portuguese Water Dog looking for a quiet household with active dog parents. He has some behavioral issues, so we are looking for an adult only home with one or two adults (no grandparents or in-laws) and an outdoors oriented family, who loves to hike, camp, etc. Carson is energetics and a lover of life and people 99% of the time. He is a resource guarder and has bitten several times over his life when somebody has reached in to pick up something that he was guarding. Most recently when the mother-in-law picked up a toy that he dropped when he was in an over excited state. Carson is very smart and very trainable, and these situations are very avoidable. Carson gets along well with cats and can be paired with a Doggy friend when introduced properly. He walks well on a leash with his head harness and has learned not to be reactive on his walks. He loves to play! Great in the car! A perfect travel, buddy! Has always been good for the groomer. And did I mention he loves to hike! There will be several meet and greets and several home visits prior to the final adoption so please, families within a normal driving distance only. Adoption $250. Carson is neutered, vaccinated, heartworm tested negative and on prevention.

Overview:
The Portuguese Water Dog, or PWD, is a fascinating and active breed originating from Portugal's Algarve region, where they historically assisted fishermen by herding fish into nets, retrieving lost tackle, and acting as couriers between boats. Physically, they are medium-sized dogs, known for their distinctive, non-shedding, wavy or curly coat, which can be black, brown, or white (or combinations). They possess a robust, muscular build and webbed feet, perfectly adapted for their aquatic heritage. Temperamentally, PWDs are intelligent, energetic, and loyal companions, thriving on mental and physical stimulation. They are generally good with children and other pets, making them excellent family dogs for active households, though their exercise needs make them less suitable for small apartments unless adequately walked and engaged. While generally healthy, potential owners should be aware of breed-specific concerns like hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), and juvenile cardiomyopathy.
