Description
Dog Breed: Terrier / Mixed. LOOKING FOR A CALM HOME: Approx. 7 years old / Approx. 23 lbs. Hi there, I’m Ashley! I was adopted as a puppy 7 years ago, but things didn’t work out forever in that home as I ended up at animal control. It was discovered that I nipped my owner during the night while we slept (I was likely startled from sleep). So, Mostly Mutts came back for me, and I arrived at the shelter overwhelmed but I’m adjusting to shelter life, though it is stressful, and I hope to be adopted soon! I spent some time in the prison/foster training program off-site and learned a lot! I was adopted for about a week, but I discovered that I don’t want to live with another dog, so I’m back and looking for a new home. • OTHER DOGS/CATS/KIDS: I want to be your only dog as I don’t want to share my person with another dog. / Cats unknown. / I recently met a boy and girl around 10 years old at Mostly Mutts and I was calm at first, but when they started running, I barked at them as if to tell them to slow down. I think I’d do best with older kids such as 15+ since I like to take things slowly and get to know you, so if you have older calm teens, let’s meet. • PERSONALITY/ENERGY LEVEL: I can be fearful of new people, especially men and new situations, so I simply need a dog savvy confident leader who will follow the guidelines established by MM to be successful. In the prison/foster training program, I was comfortable with my male handler after about two days of building trust. We’ll go over that with you and are happy to help! Give me time to trust you and the volunteers describe me as: sweet, friendly, playful, curious, smart and a very good dog! If rushed and overwhelmed by people like I was in a home I visited for a day, I’ll nip, but I don’t want to, as I give lots of signals that I need time. I may guard my favorite person, but that is very trainable, and Mostly Mutts will be happy to provide training in that area. / Energy level: 5-7. • SKILLS/CRATE/POTTY: I'm in the Mostly Mutts University training program and have already mastered the ‘sit’, ‘down’, ‘stay’, ‘come’, ‘leave it’, ‘drop it’ and ‘place’ commands. I also greet friendly strangers without jumping up on them, and I look forward to learning even more! When leashing me, I like people to be calm and get down on my level. / I’m doing well in my crate at Mostly Mutts; however, I sometimes give a little growl when men walk by at the MM shelter. / My potty manners have been good on the shelter schedule, as well as in the prison/foster training program off site (both inside and outside of my crate), so hopefully that will be the case in my new home, too. • LIKES/DISLIKES: I like playing with toys, Nylabones, going for walks and sitting in the sun on a nice day with the nice volunteers. I soak up the attention that I get from the volunteers once I’m comfortable with them, asking politely for tummy rubs in the grass. I’m sure we’ll find lots of other things we will enjoy doing together. / I don’t like it when people go too fast with me and don’t give me time to trust them, and I haven’t been fond of some men. I'm also not a fan of the rain so it’s too bad they don’t make doggie umbrellas! I don’t seem to be a dog that enjoys being carried. I’m sure I wouldn’t like it if I didn’t get enough love, attention, exercise and training. • MEDICAL: I'm current on annual vaccinations, micro-chipped and spayed. I’m looking for a great home with a patient, dog-smart family to love and be loved by! My adoption fee is $299.00, and I’m located in Kennesaw, Ga.

Breed overview

Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
