Dog Breed: Boxer / Mixed (medium coat). Say `hello!` to Jester! But maybe kinda quietly because he's a little nervous at first... Jester has a feature called `heterochromia,` which means he has two different colored eyes, but this does not affect his vision. He came in as a stray, so we don’t know much about his history. We know he can be a bit nerouvs when he first meets new people or animals or goes to new places, but with encouragement and positive reinforcement, he gains confidence pretty quickly and is sweet and snuggly! He recently went on a sleepover with a volunteer. She reports: “Jester is very much a cuddle bug. He wants to be as close as possible at all times and is very sweet. We went on a walk and I could tell the outside world (bikes, cars, and people) is still intimidating to him. He seemed pretty nervous on the walk so we opted for more quiet time at home. Jester had no accidents inside but I made sure to take him out often...he saw my cat from a distance and didn’t seem interested in engaging more which was great to see. Overall, he's a sweet boy who just needs to gain more confidence to live his best life.” Jester may do well with another dog who can help show him the ropes of family life, and with good guidance on how to be calm and respectful, he MAY do okay with a dog-savvy cat. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.
