Description
Dog Breed: Yorkshire Terrier Yorkie / Mixed (medium coat). Some dogs are naturally timid or shy, while others may not have learned to trust people while they were young. These dogs need to feel safe before they will interact with people; the work to build a relationship of trust could be a long and hard one but the experience can be one of the most rewarding of dog ownership. Chicken Little Dogs: are fearful of new people and places, take time to trust, shut down here at the shelter, and will bite if people push or try to interact too quickly. However, once they trust a person, the often become very bonded. MEETING CHICKEN LITTLE DOGS: â¢COMPLETELY IGNORE THE DOG â¢Please avoid the following until the dog comes to you and initiates contact first: Making eye contact Trying to touch or reach for the dog Talking to dog â¢Let the dog sniff you. â¢DO NOT REACH FOR DOG OTHER PETS: Nessie is not particularly interested in other dogs; she would likely do best with other low key dogs. [Case by Case (Must Meet First)] OWNER EXPERIENCE: Nessie's biggest requirement is that her humans let her set the pace. [First Dog] KIDS: Nessie is a Chicken Little dog and would do best with humans who would be able to let Nessie set the pace for their interactions. She will need patience and support as she comes out of her shell and many times younger humans are unable to understand how their actions may scare Nessie. [18+ (Must Meet First)] ACTIVITY LEVEL: Nessie has been the ultimate couch potato since arriving at TJO. Once she has started really settling into her new home, she may prove to be up for regular walks or she may continue her reign as Queen Couch Potato. [Couch Potato] VETERINARY CARE: Nessie arrived emaciated and is still working on getting to a healthy weight. Her exact care at home will be determined by how far along in her healthy weight gain journey she is at the time of adoption. [Above Average] LEVEL OF TRAINING NEEDED: Positive reinforcement training will help Nessie bond with her new owner as well as ensuring she has a mastery of basic commands and behavorial expectations. Nessie may need extra support and patience as training may be a wholly new experience for her. [Moderate] GROOMING: Regular brushing will help keep Nessie's coat clean and matt-free between groomings; she should be groomed every 6 - 8 weeks. [Professional Grooming]

Breed overview

Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
