Name: Frito Best Guess for Breed: Wire haired terrier and shepherd mix Best Guess for Age: 5 years as of August 2025 SEX: Male Approximate Weight: 29 lbs - probably needs to drop a few Gets Along With: Other dogs! We haven't seen him with cats or kids but we are happy to discuss integration techniques with any potential adopters! Currently Living at: Rural shelter; needs a foster or forever home in the DC area to get here! Frito is Looking For: This little cutie landed in the shelter through no fault of his own. He's a great age. Solidly adult - out of the nutty puppy yips - and has all that wonderful dog energy for sniffy walks and world exploration and all that good stuff. He's more than ready for his new chapter, the one he hopes is his forever. Is that you? Is he the one you see by your side? A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
