Description
Dog Breed: Shepherd / Mixed (medium coat). Name: Maggie Sex: Female Estimated Age: About 6-12 months old (as of 8/5/25) Best Guess for Breed: Border Collie / Great Pyrenees / German shorthaired Pointer mix Weight: About 30 lbs (as of 8/5/25) Lives With: Dogs and people (including kids)! Housebroken? Yes Story: Maggie was rescued in West Virginia. We are so happy to have her safe and sound in a DC-based foster home now. Maggie is a happy sweetie who loves people and gets along great with other dogs and puppies. She knows just how to get comfortable up on the couch with her humans, and will love to join you on walks and trots around the neighborhood. Maggie is just looking for someone to be her new best furend and we know that she will repay them with endless amounts of love and tail wags. Like all dogs, Maggie will need an adopter who is committed to setting her up for success by enrolling in obedience training and exercising her both mentally and physically. She will also need love, patience, and socialization in order to thrive! What my foster says: Margaret, Maggie for short, or Marge when she’s being extra bold, is a sweet, gentle, playful pup who was found roaming the streets while her foster family was camping in West Virginia. She had clearly been on her own for a little while, but since caring for her, she seems like a very happy, curious, young dog with a gorgeous white coat and a goofy, lovable personality. She’s still gaining confidence and can be cautious in new environments, but once she settles in, she loves to play, especially with her foster family’s adult pit bull. She’d probably do best in a home with another playful dog to help show her the ropes and get that puppy energy out. A yard would be great too, otherwise plenty of good long walks! Maggie is in the normal puppy- teething/mouthing stage (not aggressive, just chewy!) and loves toys, especially stuffies and bones. She’s doing great with potty training and walks nicely on leash, but like most puppies, she can get a little nervous around loud trucks. She’s had positive interactions with kids (ages 2-15) and is very dog social. The fee to adopt Maggie is $475. That covers the cost of all her vaccines, her spay, the collar she’s wearing, her transport to DC and her care in her foster home. She’s up to date on all age appropriate vaccines. If you think that Maggie might be your perfect match, apply today!

Breed overview

Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
