Description
Dog Breed: Unknown breed. SMOKE - *Looking for retirement home*, 14 years old, 66 pounds, friendly, easy on leash, good with dogs and kids. The gray muzzled boy has been disappointed by humans over and over. He was adopted from us two years ago at the ripe age of 12 with promises of a forever home, but he has now found his way back to the shelter when those owners were moving. Smoke was originally brought in to the shelter in 2023 with some skin issues, masses, and long nails which have mostly been taken care of but it is sad when a caretaker tells me, you should have seen him when he arrived! Sigh. But, again, he's looking good and ready to find a new home where seniors are loved and adored in a forever home. He seems to be an easy going dog, easy on the leash, easy to give treats to, easy to hang out with. He didn't bark at other dogs we walked past. He did not pull me around. Instead, he was a pleasure to walk to the yard and get some photos. We don't know much more about him but I will say, when you adopt a senior dog, you are adopting that dog as he or she is, with possibly health issues. Please be prepared, emotionally and financially, to tackle anything that may arise. Smoke deserves the love and care as he settles into retirement. He is a lovely boy waiting to meet you! VBACAC is located at 341 S Birdneck Road in Virginia Beach and we are open daily 12-5 pm .

Breed overview

Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
