Dog Breed: Shepherd / Mixed. Mia is a 6-month-old Shepherd mix with a heart full of love and a spirit that’s ready to blossom. This bright, affectionate girl is both house-trained and crate-trained, and she’s making great progress every day as she learns the ropes of being part of a family. Mia does well with respectful dogs and has been friendly with cats in a previous foster home. Mia absolutely loves being near her people and thrives on attention, affection, and routine. She has been with kids 12 and up in her current foster home. She enjoys chewing on bones, is learning how to play with her foster dog siblings, walks well on a leash and she already knows “sit.” Mia is believed to have been separated from her litter too early, so she’s still learning important doggie social skills. With time, consistency, and love, she’s becoming more confident and well-mannered each day. Mia is a special girl with so much love to give. She’ll do best in a patient, supportive home that will continue helping her grow into the amazing dog she’s meant to be. Medical Note: Mia has been diagnosed with Inherited Ventricular Arrhythmias, a heart condition found in German Shepherds. She takes two daily medications provided by the shelter, which help manage the condition. When she turns 2, we expect for her to be able to be weaned off the medicine and expect a normal life. She will need follow-ups at the cardiologist.

A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
