Description
Dog Breed: Schnauzer / Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Mixed. Adoption Fee: 450. Atlas is a friendly, affectionate, and undeniably handsome boy who’s always excited to meet new people—sometimes a little too excited, as he’ll jump up to say hello. With some basic training and consistency, he’ll quickly learn better manners. This sweet guy has a playful, lovable personality and a habit of sleeping with his belly up, showing just how comfortable he feels around those he trusts. He’ll join in barking when other dogs bark and will cry loudly if left alone, so he’d do best in a home where someone is around more often or where he has a dog buddy to keep him company. Atlas is ready for a family who can give him the love, attention, and gentle guidance he needs to grow into the amazing companion he’s meant to be. Look at Atlas playing with friends! Atlas is from Texas. They arrive in Minnesota on 8/22/2025 and will need to be picked up from the Ruff Start Rescue office in Princeton, MN between the hours of 9am and noon. Please plan for their arrival accordingly as we cannot accommodate pickups outside of this time frame. Since they haven’t arrived yet, they are available exclusively through Ruff Start’s Foster to Adopt (FTA) Program. Click here to learn more about the FTA program. Once they get to Minnesota, they might require further veterinary care. Ruff Start’s veterinary suite is located in Princeton, MN, and, as the foster, you will be required to transport your dog to and from these vetting appointments. If you are interested in getting to know this animal better, please fill out an adoption application. An adoption application is the best way to show your interest in an animal and is not a binding contract. To learn more about Ruff Start’s adoption process and the care our foster animals receive, please visit our How to Adopt page. If you are unable to adopt but want to help this animal and others in our care, you can donate to support the medical and veterinary needs of all Ruff Start Rescue animals.

Breed overview

Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
