He knows he is not the type of dog for first-time or inexperienced hound-type dog handlers. Sven is a gentle, shy soul who needs a little time to show you the big heart inside. He is a loving and obedient individual. He is looking for a calm, patient household where he can feel safe, loved, and understood. At first, he may hang back, but once you earn his trust, you will have a devoted best friend for life. He can be protective of his family if allowed, and thrives in quiet environments, away from loud noises and heavy traffic. He will be happiest in a rural home or one with a secure yard. He enjoys his meals and toys in his own space and appreciates a steady routine that helps him feel safe. With kindness and patience, he blossoms into an excellent, loyal companion. Back Story Sven’s previous family adopted him as a puppy. For four years, he lived happily with his human parents, some cat friends, and little humans. He loved them very much and was very happy and stable. Due to a divorce, Sven was separated from the family unit and was taken by his human dad to a new place. Unfortunately, Sven was alone in his new place very often, increasing his anxiety. A shock collar was used to actively “manage” him, and a bark collar was used when he was alone. This led to pain and a fear of humans, as he was shocked when he barked at a human or when one approached him. He was lonely and wanted someone to pay attention to him. The inhuman dad decided he was going to euthanize Sven because he could no longer “control” him using the shock collar. His mother rescued him and sent him to a four-week training program. Unfortunately, Sven’s trust in humans was damaged, and his anxiety increased. His mother brought him to Pets Return Home Shelter, Rehabilitation, and Sanctuary. Upon his arrival, we discovered severe scarring on his neck from over-/improper use of the shock collar. He was hand-shy, indicating he was hit by a human and was under-socialized. Sven was very mistrusting, fearful, reactive, and highly anxious when he arrived. Behavior Profile Today, Sven’s anxiety is much less than when he arrived. He is still cautious and nervous with strangers and needs slow introductions. He is very good at obeying commands and snuggling with his humans. He still has a road to travel with an experienced hound dog handler to learn that humans are not going to hurt him. He needs a quiet household with someone who appreciates his background and wants a companion to be by their side for them and not for others.
