MABEL NEEDS A FOSTER OR FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Mabel Best Guess for Breed: Boxer and hound mix Best Guess for Age: 2 years as of August 2025 SEX: Female Approximate Weight: 54 lbs Gets Along With: Other dogs! We haven't seen her with cats or kids but we are happy to discuss integration techniques with any potential adopters! Currently Living at: DC area boarding partner; Mabel would love to get a foster home while awaiting a forever home. All about Mabel: Mabel is a big sweetie of a dog. People who see pictures of her say she's a ringer for Scooby Doo - but her foster found that slightly offensive. She said firmly that Mabel is far better looking and braver than Scooby Doo! In playgroup at the shelter, she was great with all other dogs - she was a helper dog who made sure other dogs felt comfortable. She loves a good game of tag with her dog buds. And then she spent a bit of time in foster care in the DC area before going to boarding. This is what her foster said about her: "Mabel was great in my home! She seems to know all the expectations - four on the floor, no counter surfing, no chewing on unauthorized items. I offered her a plush squeaky toy and she happily took it and shook it gleefully. She did not have any accidents in the home and did her business outside. She happily and gently met my two male dogs - 8 lbs and 19 lbs - she understood the size difference. Out and about on leash, her tail went like crazy when she saw other dogs. She showed great manners when meeting new dogs - and was also very responsive to me if I didn't allow her to meet them. Ditto when meeting new humans - Mabel is open, friendly, and social. She likes meeting humans but notices if they don't seem to want to meet her, and will move on. She didn't seem to have experience being crated but was cooperative and went in for meals and to sleep overnight. She didn't bark while she was in there. Similarly, she was unsure about jumping up into a car but complied and is good in the car. Mabel is just such a happy girl and I can see she's very eager to please, to learn what her humans want from her. And oh that coat is so soft. She is very food motivated so training her will be a lot of fun. Her forever family and she will be very lucky to have each other." Heartworm information: Mabel is a truly Lucky Dog. She tested positive for heartworms, but has been treated! Heartworm is not contagious to people or other pets, but results from mosquito bites. Heartworm, if left untreated, is life threatening, but after treatment, dogs that were heartworm positive should suffer no significant long-term effects so long as they are kept on a monthly heartworm preventative. Heartworm dogs can resume full active and normal lives, but need to be kept calm for 4-6 weeks after treatment. Mabel has completed this activity restriction phase. Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken. All of our dogs are working on their crate training. TO ADOPT: The adoption fee for this dog is $475, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations, spay/neuter, and heartworm treatment.
