Dog Breed: Belgian Shepherd Malinois / German Shepherd Dog / Mixed. Ryker, located in Rhode Island, is a powerhouse of a dog. Big, strong, well-trained and ball crazy, he has tremendous promise for the right owner. Ryker has so much to offer!! This high-energy, ball-driven dog is always ready for action. He has a fantastic nose and would make a great SAR dog. He loves fetch, long walks, pool time, or running alongside your bike — Ryker is a fabulous adventure companion. And he has so many fun, and in some cases unique talents! The following are just some of the things that make Ryker, Ryker: -Protective Velcro Mal. Wants to be everywhere his person is and protect them against all potential dangers (real or imagined). -He loves to clean up…no, really. He has to put his toys inside any kind of container he can find. He must have been a housekeeper or butler in his past life because he’s even been caught making his own bed….true story. -He is so OCD with cleaning that he won’t even poop in his own yard!!!! -He gets angry at inanimate objects and punches them. Actually throws jabs at cardboard boxes and bags if they are in his way. -He seeks approval and reassurance from his person. Even immediately after corrections, he will demand you scratch his chest to make sure you still love him. -He is ready to walk, run, train or play 24/7/365. There is no time like the present for any activity for Ryker….true Mal. -He will sit there on active patrol and fight going to sleep if he thinks he has to be on guard. The best is to watch him fight closing his eyes trying to stay alert. -Watching him play ball is so much fun. He thinks he won the lottery every time he gets to jump 5 feet in the air to catch his jolly ball. Ball = Life Smart & Trained Ryker has a solid training foundation. He knows basic and advanced commands, practices extended stays, “leave it,” and waits for permission before heading out the door. He thrives on structure and loves learning! After a good workout, Ryker flips the switch and becomes a snuggle bug. He adores being close to his person, loves couch time, and is a pro at crate chill-outs – he is fantastic in his crate and goes there on command. Ryker needs a breed experienced foster or adopter who understands the behavioral challenges that can occur with these smart, talented dogs. Ryker checks all the boxes but needs serious help with resource guarding “his person.” And at 85lbs, he can be intimidating. But he responds well to a cool, firm handler who understands how to correct this behavior and provide the leadership that he needs. A best fit would be an active person with a love of the breed who has experience handling resource guarding behaviors that include reactivity and a dog "making space" by barking or biting. He needs daily structure to include training, clear behavioral boundaries, consistency, and exercise, with balanced affection. Ryker is truly a special boy. Both his former foster and his former owner love this dog and rave about what a fantastic dog/companion he is. We do provide transport assistance up to 350 miles. The applicant must drive the remainder of the distance of the transport.
