Dog Breed: Terrier / Mixed. Apollo was the Greek god of love and Apollo the Texas rescue has plenty of love to share with the lucky folks who adopt this handsome boy. He is a 3-year-old mixed breed dog with a cream and brown coat and high spirits ready for whatever life has to offer him. Apollo has been enjoying life in his foster family, with plenty of canine companions. He is a big boy at 60 pounds and thrives on energetic play. He also knows how to be gentle with small dogs like the little chihuahua with whom he had previously been residing with. Apollo is full of fun and good cheer with children. It is not known if he has a comfort level with cats. Apollo is working at his housetraining and leash walking. Since Apollo has plenty of energy and high spirits, a firm, consistent and positive approach to training will help Apollo master his manners. It is important to remember that rescue dogs will have accidents as they transition to a new home. If crate training is planned, Apollo deserves a crate in which he can stand up, turn around and lie down comfortably for a nap. Crates must be warm, welcoming places and never used for punishment. It is not always easy to make room for a large dog but if you have plenty of space in your heart and home. A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
