Description

Dog Breed: Rat Terrier (short coat). Starla is a 3-year-old, 14 lb rat terrier mix who’s been through a lot but still has the sweetest heart. She came to us from Louisiana, where she had surgery for a broken hip and completed heartworm treatment. She’s healing beautifully, just has a little limp to show for all she’s overcome! Starla is a gentle, shy girl who’s learning that the world is a safe place. She loves her crate and feels most comfortable in there, watching her foster family from afar and wagging her tail when she thinks no one’s looking. She’s slowly starting to enjoy gentle pets and quiet moments of affection. She uses training pads most of the time instead of going outside and she lets us pick her up when we need to take her or or give her a bath. Her Louisiana foster mom said she’s good with other dogs and older, respectful kids. She loves to cuddle under a blanket once she trusts you! Because she startles easily with sudden movements, a calm, patient home without young children would be best. Starla just needs a little time and love to fully blossom—and when she does, you’ll have a loyal little shadow and snuggle buddy for life. Starla is fixed, up to date on vaccines. Her adoption fee is $450. Adopting a dog is a commitment that will require annual veterinary care at a minimum, training, exercise, enrichment, etc. Pet care is not cheap or easy and adopters should consider the costs, time and training prior to adoption. After all these dogs have been through they deserve a loving, committed home. Apply adopt wagoninn.rescuegroups

Rat Terrier

A.K.A.: American Rat Terrier, Rattie, Feist, Ratting Terrier, Ratting Feist, Decker Terrier
Overview:

The Rat Terrier is a lively and intelligent American breed, originally developed in the early 20th century from a mix of Fox Terriers, Old English White Terriers, and other small terriers, primarily for farm work and pest control. These compact yet sturdy dogs typically weigh between 10-25 pounds and stand 10-18 inches tall, boasting a short, smooth coat that comes in a variety of patterns, often with large patches of color over white. Known for their energetic and inquisitive nature, Rat Terriers are remarkably adaptable and affectionate, making them excellent companions for active individuals or families. While their boundless energy necessitates regular exercise and mental stimulation, they can thrive in apartments provided their needs are met. Generally a healthy breed, they have a lifespan of 12-18 years, though some may be prone to patellar luxation or Legg-Calve-Perthes disease. Their friendly disposition and eagerness to please make them highly trainable and a joy to live with.
