Description
Dog Breed: Labrador Retriever. Currently located at our Owensboro, KY location Meet Leiah – Our Obesity Awareness Month Star! Sweet Leiah is a 110-pound black Lab mix who’s working hard on shedding a few pounds! Labs are known for their love of food, and like many of her breed, Leiah has struggled with her weight. Unfortunately, spending most of her day in a kennel doesn’t help those pounds melt away. Just like in people, obesity in dogs can lead to health issues such as joint pain, heart disease, and diabetes — but with the right home and routine, Leiah can get back to a healthy, happy weight! Leiah is spayed and heartworm positive, but don’t worry — we cover the cost of her heartworm treatment for her adopter. Because of her treatment, she can’t do heavy exercise just yet, but she still enjoys gentle walks, belly rubs, and plenty of love. If you’d like to adopt or foster Leiah, please call 270-685-8275 or email infoitvrescue to set up a meet and greet. Adoption applications are available at itvrescue. Let’s help this beautiful girl get healthy and find the loving home she deserves!

Overview:
The Labrador Retriever, a beloved and highly popular breed, originated in Newfoundland, Canada, where they were initially bred to assist fishermen by retrieving nets and stray fish. Physically, they are medium-to-large dogs, known for their strong, athletic build, short, dense, weather-resistant double coat (commonly seen in black, yellow, or chocolate), and their distinctive "otter" tail. Temperamentally, Labs are celebrated for their friendly, outgoing, and good-natured disposition, making them exceptional family companions. Their intelligence and eagerness to please contribute to their trainability, though they do require consistent exercise to prevent boredom and destructive behaviors. While adaptable, their energy levels make them more suited to homes with yards, or highly active families, rather than apartment living, unless daily extensive exercise is guaranteed. Regarding health, Labs can be prone to certain conditions like hip and elbow dysplasia, and some eye conditions, so responsible breeding practices are crucial. Overall, their loyalty, versatility, and affectionate nature firmly establish the Labrador Retriever as a wonderful addition to many households.
