Description
Dog Breed: Pug / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: 200.00. Leela the pug is super sweet and mild mannered. She prefers being around people rather than interacting with other dogs. She loves toys and is quite curious about her surroundings. She wants to check out every open space, including boxes and even grocery bags! As long as she has enough water, she's good for walks. Leela was transferred to Valley Humane on 7/31 from the East County Animal Shelter. She had been found stray. Leela weighs 14.8 pounds and is an adult dog (estimated to be aged between 4 and 7 years old). Leela has a missing left eye. She may have been born without the eye or she may have suffered a previous injury that severely damaged the globe of the eye causing it to become shrunken and scarred. Any injury has long since healed and no treatment is anticipated. Brachycephalic is a term for "short-nosed." Shorter nosed dogs include English Bulldogs, French Bulldogs, Pugs, Boston Terriers and many other breeds. Their physical conformation includes a variety of things including an elongated soft palate that extends beyond the tip of the epiglottis making airflow into the lungs difficult, stenotic nares (malformed nostrils that are narrow or collapse inward during inhalation, making it difficult for the dog to breathe through its nose) , a hypoplastic trachea (or a smaller than normal airway), and everted laryngeal saccules (a condition in which tissue within the airway, just in front of the vocal cords, is pulled into the trachea (windpipe) and partially obstructs airflow). Not every single dog will exhibit all of these characteristics, though many will have some degree of all of the above. Leela had a mass removed from her mammary gland while at VHS. The mass was sent for examination by a veterinary pathologist who determined it to be benign (not cancer.) Fortunately, these types of masses are very unlikely to recur and are cured by removal. We do not anticipate the need for any further care for this mass, however, it is possible that she could develop new tumors in other mammary glands in the future that could require treatment by your family veterinarian.
