Meet Salem – a beautiful 2-year-old female Pit mix (grey and white). ✔️ Spayed/Neutered: Yes ✔️ Vaccines: Not current ✔️ Potty trained: No ✔️ Crate trained: No Salem was adopted from Yolo County Animal Shelter about 6 months ago. She is a sweet, affectionate dog who enjoys attention from people and is friendly with children. She is excited with visitors and often likes to jump up and sit in laps. For the first several months, Salem did well with the family’s two other dogs and enjoyed playtime. Recently, however, her behavior has changed—she has become reactive toward one of the other dogs in the home, leading to a serious altercation. Because of this, her owner feels she would do best as the only pet in the household where she can thrive without conflict. Despite these challenges with other animals, Salem remains loving and people-oriented. She enjoys affection and would make a wonderful companion for someone able to give her a structured, patient, and animal-free home. The American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT) is a robust and intelligent breed, originating in the United States from crossbreeding Old English Terriers and Old English Bulldogs for dog-fighting purposes. Physically, they are medium-sized, known for their muscular build, broad heads, and powerful jaws, typically weighing between 30-60 pounds. Their coats are short and come in a wide array of colors. Temperamentally, a well-socialized APBT is often described as loyal, affectionate, and people-oriented, displaying a playful and sometimes clownish demeanor. They can be excellent family companions, provided they receive consistent training and early socialization, though their high energy levels mean they thrive with active owners. While they can adapt to apartment living with sufficient exercise, a house with a secure yard is often preferred. Notable health considerations include a predisposition to hip and elbow dysplasia, allergies, and certain heart conditions.
