Dog Breed: Unknown breed. Katie is an absolutely precious 11-year-old Dachshund/Terrier mix who came to us through a rescue in 2021. This sweet girl weighs about 30 pounds and has that classic long, low-to-the-ground build that makes her utterly adorable. Katie is a complete love bug who thrives on human companionship. She's the perfect balance of trained and affectionate - she knows all her basic commands (sit, lay down, come, stay) and just wants nothing more than to be your constant, cuddly companion. Her ideal day involves two nice walks and then spending the rest of her time snuggled up next to her favorite person. Katie is fully up-to-date on all vaccinations and health exams, spayed and in good health for her age, well-trained and responsive to commands, a champion cuddler and lap dog, and perfect for someone who wants a devoted, loving presence. Katie would absolutely flourish in a home with older children or as a companion for seniors who want a loyal, affectionate friend. She loves people unconditionally and would be happiest as an only dog where she can be the center of attention. IMPORTANT NOTE: Katie has a strong prey drive toward small, fluffy animals, which is common in terrier mixes. This means she needs a secure yard and should be the only pet in the home. With proper management and a loving family who understands her needs, she'll be the most devoted companion you could ask for. Through some unfortunate circumstances involving property access (construction and an accidentally opened gate), Katie has had opportunities to follow her natural instincts, which has made us realize she needs a home better suited to her specific needs. This decision breaks our hearts because Katie is truly wonderful with people - she just needs the right environment to thrive safely. Katie has so much love to give and would bring joy and companionship to the right family. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
