Description
Dog Breed: Shepherd (long coat). Meet Raven! Raven was brought in as a stray and was able to stay with a foster family while we attempted to find her owners. Unfortunately, no one came looking for this sweet girl. This is what the foster family said about Raven in the short time that they had her: "A few things I'd say about Raven: Shy at first, but opens up and loves affection (holding hands, ear scratches, belly rubs). She wants to stay by your side. I've kept her on a long line because we don't have fences but she doesn't wander very far before turning around and jogging back. She has learned sit, come, and kennel since we've had her. Tolerates grooming (nails, bath, de-shedding). When she finds a place she is happy/comfortable she will want to head towards that spot. She enjoys sitting on our lounge chair by the pool and watching the world. She's quite vocal with new people around but will settle in once she's getting attention and then her tail will start wagging. She hasn't shown any aggression towards my dog or towards our cats (all at a leash distance)." All dogs are vaccinated, microchipped and spayed or neutered (if they are old enough) before they leave the shelter. A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
