Dog Breed: Shih Tzu. A SPECIAL NEEDS LITTLE FELLOW: Approx. 1 year old / Approx. 11 lbs. Hi, I’m Leonard! I’ve been on quite a journey so far — I started out at animal control, spent some time in a home, and now I’m back with Mostly Mutts, looking for the person or family who’s meant just for me. I’m a unique little guy with a few neurological quirks that make me extra special. Sometimes my legs give out, and I might bump into things when I walk or run. I’ve had x-rays done, but nothing unusual was found. Because of these challenges, and some guarding, I’ve had a few nips in the past — so I’ll need a patient, understanding person who can give me the love and support I need to thrive. Right now, I’m in the prison/foster training program where the structured environment is helping me. If you think I might be the special friend you’ve been waiting for, please inquire at 770-272-6888 to find out when I'm available to meet. • OTHER DOGS/CATS/KIDS: I met other dogs at Mostly Mutts and wasn’t ready to play with them, but I also didn’t show any aggression, so if you have a nice lower key type of dog at home already, let’s meet! / Cats unknown. / A home without kids is best as I can be nippy. • PERSONALITY/ENERGY LEVEL: I’m a calm, somewhat timid little guy who likes it when people take their time with me so I can get to know, trust and love them and then show them my sweet nature. I may also need some extra time to feel at home since noises in the home startled me, especially at nighttime. I tend to bond with one or two people in the home and then guard those people. For the people that I love and trust, I have shown that they can hold me, groom me and kiss me, etc. I think that things in general can be a bit overwhelming to me, so I have used my teeth when uncomfortable with a situation or guarding, which has led to a few fingers getting bitten as I guarded my food, toys, person, etc. / My current energy level is 3-4. It may increase a little once I settle into my new home and feel at home. • SKILLS/CRATE/POTTY: I am a student in the Mostly Mutts University training program off-site and they are working to learn what works best for me. My trainers will be happy to discuss my challenges with you and how best to manage them. / My crate manners are good at Mostly Mutts, and I like it when the volunteers let me come out of it on my own. / My potty manners have been pretty good on a schedule with a few accidents. • LIKES/DISLIKES: I like it when people give me time to get to know them. I also like it when folks get down to my level to leash me. I enjoy climbing in the laps of my trusted people and just being with them. I also like it when people talk sweetly to me. I’m sure we’ll find lots of other things we will enjoy doing together. / I don’t like being rushed or being around too many people and I’m sure I wouldn’t like it if I didn’t get enough love, attention and training. • MEDICAL: I'm current on annual vaccinations, micro-chipped and neutered. We believe that my challenges (the unusual, some say “wonky,” walk, legs giving out, etc. and the behavioral challenges mentioned above) may stem from not being bred by a reputable breeder. I’m taking a good over-the-counter joint supplement daily and I like it in a little piece of cheese, please. I’ve also started Fluoxetine for anxiety/behavior, so ask how that is going. I’m looking for a special family that will understand my special needs, has a calmer home, will be my leader, love me and take great care of me furever!
