Description
Dog Breed: Black Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Georgia is a sweet southern girl looking for a new home in New Jersey! She arrived at SRAS on 9/6 and has presented as a sweet but seriously shy young girl. Georgia is also a relatively large dog for her age— 6 months old, estimated around 50 pounds but very tall and lanky, with lots of room to grow and fill out. Georgia hasn’t had too much of a chance to interact with other dogs since arriving, but she’s a nice girl and would probably do well with another dog that could show her the ropes and give her a little confidence. Georgia’s ideal owner will have patience and give her more time to acclimate to her brand-new surroundings and work through her fears. To meet our fabulous pets, stop by Somerset Regional Animal Shelter, 100 Commons Way in Bridgewater, NJ. We're open daily 12-3:30pm, no appointment necessary! For more information, call the shelter at 908-725-0308.

Breed overview

Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
