Description
Dog Breed: Poodle (unknown type) (long coat). Meet Winnie. This precious little Poodle girl came from a bewildering situation. Her owners were hobby breeders who purposely bred their dogs but couldn’t find good homes for all the puppies or provide them with proper care. The pups were not kept current on essential vaccinations and were confined indoors full-time, never experiencing a yard, walks, or the outside world. Thankfully, when the owners realized they couldn’t place the remaining puppies, they reached out to our rescue for help. Worthy Dog took in two, and another local rescue took the other two. W innie came to us needing updated vaccinations, relief from flea irritation, and a much-needed grooming. After a vet visit and a spa day, she looks and feels so much better! Winnie is now thriving in her foster home with a mom, dad, and two dogs. While she was shy at first, hse quickly connects with her humans and finds comfort in her pack. She joyfully romps in the yard, follows the other dogs’ lead, and eagerly joins in for walks. FOSTER MOM UPDATE - 10/25/25 Winnie is doing extremely well. After only a few days, she’s not shy around my husband or dad. She may bark when people come to the door, but she is never aggressive or mean to anybody. She’s just doing her job. Winnie’s favorite thing is to sit on the couch with you and be affectionate all day long. She really wants to be with her people and is very cuddly, and is so excited to see you when you come home, jumping for joy. It takes a minute for her to calm down, but she’s still new here, so I expect that to improve with time. Overall, she is a very chill pup except when you come in the door for the first five minutes. She will have some young dog spurts of energy. Like when you are trying to make the bed, she may jump on the bed and do zoomies around the house, but in general, she’s a moderate energy snuggly dog. Winnie does enjoy her walks and is great on leash with her harness. She rides great in the car, and we drive to the Greenway for our daily walks. We have walked out front of my house, which is on a busy road, and she doesn’t seem to be phased out by the traffic or noises at all. We have been leaving Winnie a long for short periods of time with our dogs and she does fine. She is not a fan of the crate, but has been trustworthy in the home. She has not torn up anything in the house and is not destructive at all. She is house trained and will go outside and use the doggie door like a professional. Winnie is very much a velcro dog with her humans, but also really enjoys the company of other dogs. She is more confident as part of a pack. I think she would do best with another dog or two in her new home. One thing to note when we first got her, she was actively looking for a way to get out of the fence, but now that she's become more settled and comfortable, she's stopped. Like she says, ‘ok, this place might not be too bad’." ****** Winnie has a gentle, loving nature and has proven wonderful with kids, too. Her life has completely changed overnight, and she's learning what it means to be a happy, cherished family dog. She does experience some anxiety when left alone in a new environment, so she’ll do best in a home with another confident dog to show her the ropes and a family with a flexible schedule. Apply today! Breed overview
Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
