Description

Dog Breed: German Shepherd Dog (medium coat). Meet Nessa 2025! This 8 year old, 60 pound lady is as sweet as they come and just wants to be by your side. She has impeccable manners: never jumps on furniture or people, walks like a dream on the leash, and doesn’t bark. She’s also dog and cat-friendly and perfectly content to simply lounge wherever you are, making her an ideal companion for a calm and cozy home. Nessa is a gentle, shy soul who bonds deeply once she trusts you. She enjoys her toys, but does not like to share them with other animals. She travels well in the car and would thrive in a family who has the patience to help her out of her shell. She’s friendly when meeting strangers, although she has not been around any small children, and would be a great companion on any adventure you have awaiting. Nessa is housebroken and crate trained and doesn't need a fenced in yard. She would be an especially wonderful match for anyone looking for a gentle, loyal companion. Interested in making Nessa part of your family? Contact your adoption coordinator. If you do not yet have an adoption coordinator, please complete an adoption application at .freedomgermanshepherdrescue. Nessa is being fostered outside of Winston-Salem, NC.

German Shepherd Dog

A.K.A.: Alsatian, Alsatian Wolf Dog, Shepherd Dog, GSD, Deutscher Schäferhund, Schäferhund, Berger Allemand, Pastore Tedesco, Perro de Pastor Alemán, Alsatian Dog
Overview:

The German Shepherd Dog, a truly iconic breed, originated in Germany in the late 19th century, primarily for herding sheep. They are easily recognizable by their athletic, medium-to-large build, typically weighing between 50-90 pounds, with a distinct double coat that can be black and tan, sable, or solid black. Known for their intelligence and loyalty, German Shepherds possess a remarkably trainable and courageous temperament, making them exceptional working dogs in fields like police and service work. While generally good with families when properly socialized, their high energy levels and need for mental stimulation make them unsuitable for apartment living without significant daily exercise. Prospective owners should be aware of common health concerns such as hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as degenerative myelopathy, underscoring the importance of responsible breeding and regular veterinary care.
