Dog Breed: Chinese Shar-Pei / Shepherd. Hi! I'm Peiton, your future loyal buddy! I love playing with my dog friends and exploring every nook and cranny of our play area. I'm known for my gentle nature and goofy antics that will surely keep you entertained. I'm also pretty smart, so I've picked up some great manners along the way. I'm always curious about the world around me and love learning new things. I have lots of energy and love playing with squeaky toys! If you're looking for a playful, gentle, and loyal companion, I'm your guy! Let's start our adventure together, shall we? I'll benefit from going on walks with my new family so I can get some good exercise and trim my waistline. I graduated from The SPCA's highly regarded Ruff Start Program in 2024 which pairs shelter dogs in need of extra care or attention with inmates at Salinas Valley State Prison for training and love. Overview:
The Chinese Shar-Pei is an ancient and distinctive breed, originating in southern China where they were historically used as farm dogs, hunters, and guardians. Their most striking physical characteristic is their loose, wrinkled skin, particularly prominent in puppies, and their unique "hippopotamus" muzzle. They are a medium-sized dog with a short, rough coat that comes in a variety of solid colors. Temperament-wise, Shar-Peis are often described as independent, intelligent, and fiercely loyal to their families, though they can be reserved with strangers. Early socialization is crucial to foster their confident and calm nature. While generally good with children in their own family, their independent streak means they thrive in homes that understand and respect their unique personality. Their relatively low exercise needs and adaptable nature make them suitable for apartment living, provided they receive regular walks and mental stimulation. Owners should be aware of potential health considerations, including skin fold infections, entropion (an eyelid condition), and certain allergies, requiring attentive care and regular veterinary check-ups.
